No, Jesus didn't say or mean what you think. If you comprehend John 5:24, you will know that the possession of eternal life occurs when a person becomes a believer.
Then, if you comprehend John 10:28, you will know that recipients of eternal life shall never perish.
Salvation has nothing to do with works, deeds, lifestyle, etc.
When a person believes (trusts) in Christ for salvation, they receive the gift of eternal life. John 5:24
1 Tim 1:16 - But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.

of course Jesus did not lie or contradict Himself -- not when He says all who believe will be saved, either. and Paul is not lying when he says salvation is by grace through faith, not of works.
it is like you say -- whoever is truly saved, does righteous things. not because they do them thinking they must earn heaven, but because God changes our natures. salvation is a supernatural change - we become new. our hearts are redeemed
it is interesting in Matthew 25:37-39 the righteous had no idea they were doing good works. they tell God, 'when did we ever do those things You are commending us for??'

Yep, save mean save from selfishness, Jesus in believer produce fruit of love and manifest in helping the poor like what Jesus say in Matt 25
That is why the believer not remember that they help the poor becouse the believer not producer only bear the fruit produced by Jesus

All my life as Christian I hear salvation by faith not by work, I was think it mean ok to rob the bank, as long believe in Jesus will be save
