Are Men Really Attracted to a Woman's Great Pair of... Eyelashes?

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering what you all thought of the fashion/makeup trend that convinces women that they just have to have bigger and bigger... pairs of eyelashes.

My Mom and I went to lunch the other day (Mod Pizza! It's really good!), and one of the girls who was part of the assembly line had false lashes so bushy that they literally resembled a shag carpet.

It was a bit like this:

Unfortunately, I'm not exaggerating. Now I'm sure the girl had beautiful eyes, but I couldn't see them -- all I could see were these huge woolly caterpillars perched above her upper eyelid that would move up and down when she blinked. (I am 310% sure that there is no way they were natural, as her bottom lashes were just a thin line.) I was seriously wondering how she could even see in order to make the pizzas.

And I always wonder exactly how these trends start. I'm sure there are executives at fashion and makeup corporations who decide things like these are THE latest painful, expensive "look" that women "must" have, and then proceed to market the bajingas out of it.

I myself have extremely sensitive eyes and have never been able to hop on the false eyelash, let alone mascara or even full eye makeup bandwagon. The only time I try to wear eye makeup is maybe for church, and then I have to wash it off as soon as I get home because my eyes are burning.

And I can't help but think that men really don't notice or care about women's eyelashes all that much.

But maybe I could be wrong?

Now I'm certainly not trying to say that advertising doesn't push unrealistic ideals on both genders.

I was just curious as to how much eyelashes mattered to men (supposedly the ones we are doing this to impress,) if at all.

So how about it, everyone?

* Ladies, what do you think of the really really false false eyelash trend? Do you bother putting in the time or trouble to try it? How do you like the results?

Just to be clear, I'm in full support of anyone who likes to do a little natural enhancement (of the eyelash variety.) I would do so myself if they didn't make me feel like my eyes were on fire. The only lashes I question are the ones that are so extreme, you're wondering what kind of fuzzy creatures the woman glued on to her eyelids that morning.

I think false/fake eyelashes are unattractive. However, some people do not have a lot of eyelashes or short eyelashes, so regular false eyelashes may be their only option. For people with regular eyelashes, I think use of mascara and eyeliner is fine. The point of eye make-up is to open up/make your eyes look beautiful, not hide them.

Any who, I have noticed this at times too, and recall a woman, a friend of a friend, who had what I will call the unfortunate distinction of having her natural eyelashes decidedly pointing down, on top of which she would add false eyelashes, which decidedly pointed up, the combined effect of which could be likened to viewing a train crash, in that it was in no wise pleasant to witness, and yet towards which one's eyes were repeatedly and irrevocably riveted. In the animal kingdom there are those species with accentuated eyes, often by being ringed with black. On dogs and cats (as many others) it does enhance their cuteness/beauty factor. I have wondered if animals ooooohhh and awwww over the length of other animals eyelashes? Somehow, I doubt it. Hollywood has indubitably been an influence in the wearing of make-up, with many seemingly not realizing that the copious amounts worn for screen and still shots is not meant to be copied by normal folks doing normal tasks as they go about their daily routines. Wearing a bit of makeup for special occasions only has been my preference for many decades, and I have only ever donned false eyelashes for Hallowe'en in days gone by

There's a few that I have noticed that look as fake as bat wings, from an old Bela Lugosi movie. I have to look the other way to keep from laughing.

Not sure about eye lashes but when I was teen, I fell in love with this girls eyes as they were this beautiful blue.

Come to find out, they were fake contact lenses as I didn't know that was a thing.

So I would imagine every one has different attributes they find attractive.

Maybe she is trying to attract this fellow below. Caterpillar eye brow meet caterpillar mustache.

I mean, her eyes are her eyes and she can tart them up however she wants. But it's more amusing than attractive. I know it's supposed to be seductive, but it's just weird and sometimes hilarious.

In the animal kingdom there are those species with accentuated eyes, often by being ringed with black. On dogs and cats (as many others) it does enhance their cuteness/beauty factor. I have wondered if animals ooooohhh and awwww over the length of other animals eyelashes? Somehow, I doubt it.

Funny you should mention animals...

Long, long ago in a forum far, far away, somebody mentioned Singleringen (which is a ring marketed for single people) and the spokesperson at the time was some moderately famous woman. The ad posted on the forum had a picture of her.

With all the eyeliner and lashes, I commented that she looked like a startled puma.

Well... She DID look a bit like a feline that had been mildly surprised...

Not sure about eye lashes but when I was teen, I fell in love with this girls eyes as they were this beautiful blue.

Come to find out, they were fake contact lenses as I didn't know that was a thing.

Oh man, I don't know when colored contacts "officially" became all the rage, but there was a very pretty Asian girl I worked with who got the blue contacts -- and it seriously made her look like a zombie from The Walking Dead.

I also worked with an African American girl who was gorgeous but she got these light brown, almost striped contact lenses that made her eyes look like some sort of exotic cat.

I know one thing that I always find a bit freaky about those contacts is that the pupil is very pronounced, and since it's "painted on", it doesn't shrink or dilate like a normal pupil does -- it just looks like they have the same huge stare all the time!

Maybe it's just me, but if anyone was looking back at me like this, uh...

I wouldn't be standing there for very long, that's for sure.

What makes me think it's a real person is the inside corners of the eyes, that tiny triangle of membrane between the eyeball and skin. That can of course be easily replicated, but most don't bother replicating it with any high degree of fidelity when making mannequins.

This is so true. Eyelashes add expression to their faces I think.
