The psychology behind it is that often times if at least one person doesn't act, no one else will. "Someone else probably knows what's going on and they aren't stepping in".
It's a crappy behavior but we'll documented and not that uncommon.

yeah it's pretty horrible that no one did anything to help her

I actually find it even more unsettling that the rapist thought he could proceed in front of other people

This unfortunately doesn't surprise me. If this man is of a large frame, no one single-handedly especially a woman could have taken down this man. One punch on the face could make someone unconscious. A lot of people including men do not know how to fight back physically. Surprised there were not a couple of physically strong people on the train to help. Maybe there are other missing details like this man had a gun.

Don't they have phones? Can't they call 911? I'm not giving any of them a pass. I have been in similar situations on NYC subway, granted I'm not a petite woman, but I threw the bum off the train.

Right, surprised no one called the police. I guess it is the "by-stander" effect - the larger the crowd, the less individual responsibility the person feels because he thinks someone else will make the call. But, calling the police would have been useless in this case. Someone really needed to take down the guy.

Maybe it is the zombie effect, I heard that each shot you get of the vaccine disables part of your brain, if they had the third shot, the booster, maybe it has turned them to zombies.

Anyway, if it is from the vaccine we'll see a lot more of this in the near future.

It's amazing what these sorcerers can do with a little genetic engineering.

It is not from the vaccine lol. Look up Kitty Genovese, that story happened way before the vaccine. Also, that Seinfeld episode.

Kitty Genovese led to 911 being a standard number for the cops. Also, cell phones have almost completely eliminated this problem as at the time of Kitty Genovese you would have to go to a pay phone. I used to teach forensics, I am very much aware of Kitty Genovese and this case is absolutely nothing like the Kitty Genovese story. One of the major issues is that everyone thought someone else would make the call, that could not have possibly been an issue in this case, unless they have been turned into zombies.

Both cases are similar in that no one cared. Men were supposed to be more masculine/manly back then but still didn't step up. That the men didn't step up in this generation is not too surprising.

At least based on the movies, what should ideally happen is that the good guys band together to fight off the bad guy, so no one gets seriously injured. However, now those good guys are very few so I can understand if no guy singlehandedly wants to fight off the bad guy especially if the bad guy is bigger frame.

I don't know if anyone cared in this case, but in the Genovese case it was found out that they cared a great deal and were sitting in their rooms horrified and crushed.

So sad. I've seen several studies that there more people there are who witness a crime, the less likely it is that someone will try to intervene.

Not only did no one help, but people recorded it on their phones. They are subject to being charged for doing so. I carry mace and a knife everywhere I go. Hubby has his CCW which I'm seriously considering for myself. Also armed with a tazer in our vehicle. And just for fun I have a huge female German Shepard that travels with me wherever I go. Haven't had anyone brave enough to walk up to the vehicle yet. lol And everyone in our neighborhood knows she's there. When people see her and hear her, they can't believe she's a female.

Women today need to be ready to defend themselves and aware of their situation at all times. No one is coming to your aid and cops can't get there in time in most cases. Expect to have to defend yourself. I don't know the laws in PA. What weapons you are allowed to carry. Brass knuckles, mace, a brick in your purse, something to give you an advantage. I noticed the attacker was black, wondering if that is part of the reason no one gave aid.
