I don't think anyone argues that masks (at least non-N95 masks) stops viruses 100%. It's sort of a strawman argument. The opposing view is that if everyone wore a mask when in public places, we will reduce the transmission of Covid-19. The real debate is if this decrease is marginal as some are suggesting or if it is significant like most health experts suggest.

Consider condoms and STDs. Bacterial and viral diseases are still able to penetrate (sorry, couldn't think of another word) condoms. Nevertheless, 100% of health experts say that condoms help reduce the transmission of STDs. If someone was being promiscuous, it's terrible logic to say "Well, since condoms can't 100% prevent STD transmission, I'm just going to have unprotected sex. What's the point?" It's not very logical honestly...

Hrmm... granted I don't listen to mainstream "news networks", but when I've heard people encouraging mask wearing, I never got the implication that masks stop Covid-19 100%. I usually hear percentages of people wearing them have an exponentially less chance of spreading/catching it. The explicit reasoning is to reduce the spread of Covid-19, but apparently that is being ignored in favor of an "implicit message".

If the non-real news networks like CNN/Fox are talking about a crowd gathering being "safe" because they wore masks, it's just them engaging in a double-standard. I'd advise boycotting such cable non-news networks.

I do understand and agree with your point about the term "safe sex" though. Condoms make it "safer" for people to be promiscuous, but "safe" is a rather relative term. In the same token, masks make people in public places "safer" but not immune to spreading Covid-19. Would you at the very least concede to two points:

1.) Wearing masks prevents the spread of Covid-19, even to a marginal degree in comparison to people who don't wear a mask?
2.) Condoms decrease the spread of STDs in comparison to people who have promiscuous sex without condoms?

At the very least, a mask prevents less disease from being spread onto items in a store. If you expel particulars so tiny they can go through a mask, how much easier would it then be to spread it onto items without a mask? A mask only stops a percentage of the spread (it is debateable as to how high that percentage is), but even if it was 5%, that is 5% better than not wearing a mask. The sacrifice is having to wear a mask for 30 minutes to go shopping (or 5 hours if you're a woman... jk ). I'm not dying on a hill for that cause.
