A local pastors advice troubles me...

It is only very recently that my faith is building real strength and understanding, for this I am truly grateful to the Lord.

I was having a phone conversation with the pastor at the church I briefly attended this year and he recommended some Christian music to listen to.
I’m a musician and love music but stopped listening to the stuff I used to because of corrupt messages etc...

One of the recommendations was Kanye West new album because it is apparently worship and he’s turned Christian. I think this is BLATANTLY not true and Kanye West is deceiving people.

He seems to believe that it’s acceptable to listen to and watch basically anything but I strongly believe against that.

Any opinions, advice on how to approach this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I was more wondering if I should try and warn him, what to say etc...
With him being a pastor, and a Christian for a lot longer than myself I’m really surprised he thinks Kanye West is a Christian... I really struggle to get my head around that.

I mostly listen to Contemporary Christian rock. But if a secular song has good lyrics as in not anti Biblical or morally wrong then I have no problem listening to it. On the other hand sometimes in research you are forced to listen to critics and others beliefs because it helps you to learn and address the questions and tactics of those who want mislead people away from God.

As for Kanye, his lyrics can either be Biblical or not. If they are then they are true no matter the individual. It doesn't hurt you. Now if you promote him as a role model that is a different story. I personally do not keep up with Kanye other than the occasional news report that lately I am finding more and more to agree with. But we always have to be careful with celebrities, as we should be thankful they are going in the right direction, but also not surprised if they fail. We all fail eventually. But thankfully out failures are not published for millions to see. One can only try to see the fruit and is he moving even at turtle speed towards the will of God.

I like Kanye I believe he is trying to reconnect to Christianity genuinely, but I think it will be a challenge for him ironically due to him being at the heights of fame and wealth and being married to the Kardashians. I would agree with your pastor that it doesn't matter what music you listen to. But that is also a two way street, on the same token you don't have to listen to Kanye or like him at all either.

You should not misjudge Kanye West. He is a babe in Christ and probably blundering. Someone should be discipling him. West is also making a serious effort to distribute Bibles and propagate the Gospel. But he is a new Christian who needs to learn a lot. But I could not comment on his music one way or another.

I knew the Kardashians from magazines in the check out at the Supermarket I had looked them up online to see why they were famous--reality TV, and found out there was a marriage relationship with Bruce Jenner.

After watching his testimony and some samples of his gospel singing with a choir I looked up one of his secular songs. It sounded boring and generic. Maybe I got an 'album filler' song.

Anyway, why would you assume the man's conversion was fake or speak I'll of him? Even if he has some gaps in his understanding shouldn't you rejoice if he wants to serve Christ? If you do not feel at ease listening to his gospel album, that is fine, but why speak I'll of him and judge hum? Pray for him instead.

The best course of action would be to let your pastor know what you think about that ! Concerning recommendations, it is up to you to reject or follow them. As it is written, all things are pure to the pure !

Don't be a follower of a pastor be a follower of the LORD Jesus Christ.. Let your conscience be clear before the LORD..

I do not know if Mr. West is the "traditional" Christian, that I can only pray for him to examine himself to know the truth.
What I would suggest, if I read correctly, is for you to go your Pastor and let him know your truths. If you approach him from a spiritual perspective.. He should receive and honor that. IF he wants that music to be played still, OFFER to allow someone else to "take the lead".
You can not compromise to appease the Pastor. He will be in the judgement line behind somebody too.
Do what you need to do and be right with GOD.... don't fear what the feedback, or consequence.
Do not be OFFENDED, by his belief, respect his and STAND..

As Christians, we should STILL be able to coexist, without the threat of being a target, or fired.

This is so common among Christians. The assumption that your conviction is the only right answer and everyone must be in agreement.
The individuals conviction does not determine the standard for whats right and wrong for others. Just because you have a view of music does not mean it is the only right view. Every person is meant to walk their own salvation journey and sometimes that means personal convictions can vary between individuals. What's meant for you is meant for You, and that does not mean you're supposed to put it on others.
If this man is fine with where his views are, that's his conscience. His conviction. I've known strong Christians that listened to all sorts of music, and weak Christians that only listen to Christian music.
Let people work out their own salvation rather than think it's your place to determine that for them.

I'm looking for music that edifies and uplifts, and there is a lot more of that in older christian music/classical than there is in modern secular music. Good bit of neutral music out there in most all genres that I've found though.

A bit of modern christian music is a turnoff as well to be fair



If it's music for music's sake, then a lot is available across the board. When it has an agenda or is obviously anti-scripture, I wouldn't consider someone "strong" in the faith who has no problem with it. Why listen?

I mean I guess I get using your liberty to find out if it is beneficial, but it's true that process can "look" different for everyone.

Edit: oh and @OP I'm not a fan of rap in general so I can't objectively say. It could be the pastor was trying to appeal to a younger crowd or something. Maybe he was mistaken in his words, but that sort of thing happens.

First of all i haven’t tried to “work out his salvation” that’s ridiculous.
Where in my post did I state that my conviction is the only right answer?

Yes my point was that I’ve seen various things glaringly wrong with Kanye West and thought maybe a pastor shouldn’t recommend such people.

To assume I’ve tried to judge a pastors salvation who has been a Christian for a LOT longer than I have is simply wrong.

I was wrong to judge at all, I have acknowledged that in this thread and prayed to the Lord for forgiveness and guidance on the issue.

I’m going to really start looking for good Christian music this week as I really do miss music in general! Any suggestions welcome
