I’d always assumed the “it” referred to his suffering on the cross. How could it refer to anything in the future that hadn’t even started?

Because the work of the cross is able to save those who have not yet been born and is able to say those who have not yet been born-again.

Well, to tell the truth, I usually think of Jesus and what it was for Him on the cross. I do not think of myself in that moment so much. I am pretty sure he meant his suffering was done. Anyone who has suffered great pain knowing it will soon be over can understand that feeling. You just want it to be done. You are not thinking of the benefit to you or others. Enduring pain until it is done is all the mind focuses on. That is my view, anyway. When I think of the cross I do not think of me or what I benefited from this. I think of Him and what He lost.

He emptied Himself to come down from heaven and emptied Himself again to return.

Please explain where or how you get "it is finished in Rev. 21: 6? If you are relating to "the beginning and the end- that relates to the wording Alpha and Omega.

in John 19: 30 The word is Tetelestai - finished, complete. Also in rome, a legal term, "paid in full"
In Rev 21 the word is Genomi which means to become or to take place
this would be a good place to start..

Everything that was necessary for Jesus to do in His physical body was finished at the cross. While Revelation 21:6 speaks of the culmination of the end of the current age.

Jesus Himself states in Rev 22:13 that He is in fact all those referenced in Rev 21:6: "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." Rev 22:13

He also goes on to say He is the root and offspring of David. The root being God, the offspring being Jesus:
"I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star." Rev 22:16

This difference in words used does not account for the fact that the First and the Last is not there whereas my explanation does account for this. So, a slight adjustment would be the First and the Last says "it is finished" on the cross in fulfilment of the law and the other two say "it is done" I have created the new heaven and earth and prepared it for those who are thirsty.

"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." Rev 22:12-13

the cross did not benefit The Lord Jesus, did it? Jesus died on it for not for HIS benefit but for ours.
Jesus said it is finished because of the pain HE endured? I do not see that as biblical.

Where does Jesus or the Bible say why He said, “it is finished?” The Bible, mind you. Not man-centered theology focused solely what man got out of it.

in John 19:30 Jesus said " it is finished" after being offered vinegar to drink which was prophesied about HIS Death in Is 53.

The term " it is Finished " in the greek means: to perform, execute, complete, fulfill, (so that the thing done corresponds to what has been said, the order, command, etc.) and it also means to pay.

That agrees with what I said. His suffering was finished, completed, fulfilled.
