He is there now doing exactly that. Jesus IS Israel so the Land of Israel = the whole world. Canaan was a symbol of this.
But to say that Jesus is the piece of land there in the middle-east while it sounds convincing at first to say the whole world is Canaan. You need to consider that in Zechariah 14 and elsewhere the language mentions specific gates and walls and locations within the city of Jerusalem and the surrounding area. That makes the idea of it being the whole world less likely because of how accurately these places are depicted.
