David's music probably would be to give glory to God for he was a man after God's own heart, so maybe by David praising God with his music was ministering to Saul like in a prayer like activity for Saul, and it refreshed Saul for God answered the prayer of David for Saul and the evil spirit left Saul.

It would be like us praying for our family which David was praying for Saul and using music as a tool to praise God which calmed Saul which mainly it was the intervention of God upon Saul because of his servant David.
This all may be so, but all we are told is that David played the lyre, it never mentions singing...

1Sa 16:16-23
(16) Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well.”
(17) So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.”
(18) One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the LORD is with him.”
(19) Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.”
(20) And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul.
(21) And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.
(22) And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.”
(23) And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

David’s Song of Praise
22 David sang the words of this song to the Lord. He sang them when the Lord saved him from the power of all his enemies and of Saul. 2 He said,

“The Lord is my rock and my fort. He is the God who saves me.
3 My God is my rock. I go to him for safety.
He is like a shield to me. He’s the power that saves me.
He’s my place of safety. I go to him for help. He’s my Savior.

metal is not driven by the Holy Spirit but it is driven

for that matter, plenty of so called Christian music these days, metal or not, brings no glory to God at all

it's simply entertainment

But do you have proof he sang to Saul when David played his lyre for Saul causing the evil spirit to depart?

But do you have proof he sang to Saul when David played his lyre for Saul?

do you have proof he didn't?

I never said he sang for sure and I see I didn't complete that sentence but it doesn't really matter

however he obviously did sing as indicated, and why does it bother you if he sang or did not sing?

I understand music very well and also how people are moved by it

something quieted Saul and the Bible says it was David's music but it seems it is hard to even grasp the fact an evil spirit left Saul when that music was played

note first though, that the evil spirit was FROM GOD because the Lord had removed His Spirit

23 Whenever God’s spirit came to Saul, David took the lyre and strummed a tune. Saul got relief from his terror and felt better, and the evil spirit left him. I Samuel 16

so God sent the evil spirit and do you think an evil spirit left because some boy played whatever on a stringed instrument?

I have 0 idea or thought of changing anyone's mind about music, however the Bible states plainly what happened and you are free to make of it what you will as you already have

the episode is a mystery to some even though it is plainly written

nothing more to say about any of it

My point in the OP has to do with David playing his lyre and the evil spirit departing. If you want to assume he was singing then you are introducing a different idea than what Scripture clearly stated as well as a different intention than what I had intended the OP to be.

Music is prescribed in Scripture.

"addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart," Eph. 5:19!

Ironical that we have someone saying David did not sing, when the first third of the Psalms are written by him, and then the Church of God insists in no instrumentation. David sang, period. Using both voice and instrumental music is from God, provided it is meant to worship and praise God.

Says the flute and sax player who sings lead and harmonies.

what church do you talk about? no instrumentation? all churches ive been to have instruments and why would instruments be forbidden if bible mentions specific instruments like in case of david and saul there?

I would have to disagree about both was used, when David played it implies singular action, and it was for a particular action.

Yes perhaps, but even in that case it would take words to make instrumental music worldly or spiritual, and then, only by association.
Yeah, I wasn't really trying to make the case that harp music was spiritual.

I was just thinking if I was really mad at someone but I heard someone playing "Amazing Grace" on the violin or something it would probably calm me down. Even though violin music isn't spiritual it would remind me of what God has done for us and cause a positive reaction.

1 Samuel 16:23 KJV
[23] And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Usually you hear that evil spirits use music for their nefarious ways.
What gives?
If the Psalms are any indication, David's music was probably very spiritual in nature.

I have actually heard references to this in discussing the power of praise and worship music.

Jesus' method of actually casting a demon right out with authority was surprising in his day. Apparently, Jews were doing exorcisms. Jesus asked 'by whom do your children cast them out.' They were known for that in the ancient world, that and healing.

Jesus and the apostles would command evil spirits to go. There are references to Christians performing exorcisms in the second century. Tertullian uses the fact that Christians would cast out demons that pagans had considered to be gods in his apology.

What you said about playing amazing grace is thought provoking, if you had not heard the words to amazing grace beforehand would you have known it was amazing grace being played on the violin?

But in each case above words were employed. Or are you saying that David was able to formulate words on a stringed instrument?
