He, more than all the billions of people alive at the time, or have ever lived, except 11 others, saw God in the flesh do almost all His miracles, and yet never believed Him to be the Messiah, the Son of God.
Yet went with Him, for 3 years, for his own gain. That’s TRUE betrayal.
Betrayal means that someone you trust as a friend turns out to be your enemy and stabs you in the back. However in the case of Jesus and Judas, even though Jesus called him "friend" in Gethsemane (and he was supposed to be more than a friend) Christ already knew on the day He selected Judas as one of His disciples, that this man was a devil and the Son of Perdition, and would in fact betray Him. That Satan would possess his soul so that he would sell Christ to his enemies for thirty pieces of silver (which he later regretted but failed to truly repent and ask forgiveness from the Lord). In fact Christ sent him on his way to do his dastardly betrayal while the rest of the apostles remained in the Upper Room.
Jesus and His apostles were in the garden of Gethsemane at night, and those who came to take Him captive could not have known exactly who He was unless He was properly identified by one who knew Him intimately. And this is where Judas played the role of betrayer.
There are some Christians today that fail to understand that Judas was already doomed to Hell by his own heart and his attitude. He was already stealing from the common treasury of the disciples. And he had never really believed on the Lord Jesus Christ. Otherwise he could not have betrayed Him.

I think the response of Jesus calling him friend was Jesus reaching out to him as a friend offering him a chance to repent.
We all have sinned so stealing should of not sentenced him to be a traitor.

There are several records which indicate the chief priests, the pharisees, the scribes did not take Jesus into custody because they feared the people.
What Judas did was receive money to lead the chief priests to Jesus when He was not surrounded by "the people". Judas led them to Jesus when there were only a few disciples around Jesus.
Matthew 26:
14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
sought opportunity = sought = Greek zētéō – to seek by inquiring; to investigate; opportunity = Greek eukairia = a convenient time
deliver in vs 15 and betray in vs 16 = from Greek paradídōmi = to hand over, deliver
They waited until Jesus was not in public where His arrest would cause public outrage. From there, they held their sham trial.

I thought you were looking for something a little deeper than just he led the dudes to Jesus. We can say that and then thread done.

Judas' unbelief LED to the MOMENT of betrayal.
I would think both . Unbelief causes betrayal. Bringing false prophecy, false apostles as those who "fall back or backward in judgement.". It is used that way through out the bible

Its a sign that betray was occurring. The kiss of death... I AM he and they went and fell backward indicating no salvation, no faith.

Because it was a deadly kiss, with no love at all, that lead to both his own death and the death of Christ.

It was customary and still is today that a disciple of a rabbi was to greet his teacher with a kiss. It is given out of respect and love for the teacher.
The interesting thing about Judas was the he was considered a follower of Christ . He also was sent out to preach and teach the Gospel which he did. It's even possible he healed and cast out demons among the people.
Although the scriptures are vague and do not go in to depth about his activity it is clear that he became a outcast and labeled a traitor among the chosen.
Proverbs tells us "it is better to be rebuked by a friend than kissed by a enemy".
One must ask ourselves "how do we approach Jesus? how do we approach God? There is more than just the betrayal to learn from the story.
He didn't. Judas did exactly as planned by God. Even Jesus knew this when He told Judas to go and do what he had to do quickly, when He was in the upper room after sharing the last supper with His Disciples. That included Judas.
Jesus would have not been nailed to the cross were it not for Judas. Jesus was God in flesh. He chose Judas knowing who he was from the beginning as one who would help Jesus fulfill His mission on earth; to die and take the sins of the world upon Himself on the cross.
The Book of Luke chapter 22 This is why Judas shared in the last supper prior to leaving, as Jesus instructed him to do min you, and telling the temple guard where to find Him later in the garden of Gethsemane.
Judas actually repented of his sin, see the Book of Matthew chapter 27. And then he hanged himself because he could not bear to live with what he'd done.
However, remember on the cross? Jesus forgave everyone responsible for His being there? That would include Judas. "Father forgive them for they know not what they do."
That would include Judas because he did not know until after at Jesus arrest that he had betrayed innocent blood. Remember, the elders of the temple wanted Jesus arrested. And sought to have him executed by Rome, because it was too close to Passover for them to stone Jesus to death under the charge of blasphemy, so they sought Rome's assistance to execute Jesus under the charge of sedition.
See the Book of Luke chapter 23: Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”
Who would have insured Jesus died so as to take the sins of the world upon Himself on the last sin altar? Were it not for Judas, the elders of the temple, Pilate, the people who rallied for Barabbas to be freed rather than Jesus? How else would Jesus purpose been accomplished?
As an aside, did you know that in Islam they teach that it was not Isa(Jesus) who was executed on the cross but Judas?
