The system of tithing dates back to when the Levites were the priests. There wasn't 100+ families per priest then.

Hmm that says it all. A christian who rejoices over death. Are you happy about the children dying too? If that is christianity you can keep it!
Take heart, that is their Christianity . Unfortunately, in a little over 2000 years people , being egoistic, have managed to make Christ's simple true loving teachings into their own image and likeness. Peripheral decoration if you will of the actual meat of the Gospel.
It matters little unless it is blasphemous. God knows the heart.

It seems to me that some people have an issue with humbling themselves or accepting that God's in charge and not us. Our purpose in lif is to love God more than everything else put together. And love other as much as ourselves. Sure there were errors in translations caused by obsolete languages and lack of punctuation. God was never a pacifist he's the supreme commander of all and everything. Whether we like it or not. Following other desires more than loving him is idolatry which is adultery against God. A loving parent occasionally needs to chastise their beloved children. Sometimes occasionally, sometimes often. Depending upon how rebellious they are. Get over it.

Interesting . If we love God more than everything else put together first, and then we're to love others as much as that self that loves God more than everything else including ourselves....What's there for the neighbor?

Um... you do realize that "neighbour" is included in "others"?

Here is a quote from a leading New Age Atheist.

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.
Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

.
Richard Dawkins has never, sadly, come face to face with The Holy God! When he does(if) he will see he is a sinner in need of a Savior and Scripture is not wrong but his heart is!!!

Jesus 'upgraded' the original commandment

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
(Joh 15:12-14 KJV)

I doubt it can be done, except "Christ lives in us."

Christianity has its roots in Judaism, but has blossomed into a beautiful flower.

As I already noted that the Israelites engaged in idolatry, it seems like an odd point to prove.
Sorry, I thought it might help others, please don't take it personally.

The Israilites acted in disobedience to God who said not to kill. Yet the god of Moses apparently told them to commit mass murder. Now make your excuses for the Jewish god of war. I have heard them all before
Look up the Hebrew for thou shall not kill it's a unjustified execution. There are plenty of exceptions, self defense, War and punishment. It was eye for an eye mentality.

Why do people always take the side of the Israilites? The Canaanites were being attacked and were perfectly entitled to defend themselves, as you correctly say. I think the Israelites genocide was wicked in the extreme, and people here praise them! Give me strength.

its because God commanded it and canaanites were idolaters israelites worshiped Jehovah God

do you think other countries in this world were started with men standing around in circle holding hands? just very unrealistic. almost all countries start with war or get independence with it.

welcome to real world. God will torment all His enemis forever in the lake of fire and you are worried about some canaanites? who cares. they got off easy, now they have it tough in hellfire. so some wars in this world is nothing compared to what God will do to His enemies.
