look, I believe CS1 might have given good info with regards to historicity regarding tongues...pretty sure someone did
seek God and ask Him to show you. that's what I did and many others have done the same
two things I have seen...
1. many are proud and say 'I will not speak that garbage and sound like that'
2. some are fearful and so do not ask even though they say they believe
by now, after all the years, it is 2nd nature to me and I thank God for His gift and whatever else He decides to bless me with
the Holy Spirit is likened to the wind in scripture. can anyone make the wind stop or even start? besides Jesus

Honestly, to a point I can't blame people for mis-perceptions. satan goes to great lengths to muddy the waters. But there comes a point where they are just being obstinate and stubborn. That I do blame people for.

I am not saying I fully know but I can say
if your logic is carnal you will not have spiritual understanding. it seems you need to reduce the supernatural to explain to those who do not agree with the Unrestricted God of the Bible. To grope Human intellect and have an explanation of scriptures were God did something powerfully in the lives of those in the early church. That we see mockers and scoffer each time human understanding was not groped.

That is it in a nutshell. There is no doubt that was the leading of the Holy Spirit. I can tell over the years of things I would never do of myself but the Holy Spirit led me so strongly to do so that I obeyed. And there is no doubt in my mind that it was the Holy Spirit.
I recall we sang in a church years ago that didn't believe in tongues. After the service was over and people had left we were invited to a room behind the stage. We walked in and people were praying and talking in tongues!! They didn't want to upset the unbelievers so they hid and prayed together. How sad they felt they couldn't share with the whole church. I'll never forget that church.
Chrysostomus, Augustinus, Calvin, Luther, Geroge Whitfield, Jonathan Edwards taught that the sign gifts hat ceased.
You mentioned groups like Montanists, Irvingians and a German Groups in the Time of LUTHER in Münster which where heretic groups and not Really useful to claim that speaking in tongues where in the Church during History.
