Is there a real Christianity that doesn't lead to the reality of Christians today? Christians desire to emulate a fierce God who might love us all, but burns against his enemies. Would you expect his follower's to do any less? If you're supposed to be like God then look at what God is really like, and this is why Christians are the way they are today.
The God of the Old Testament is an Holy God which no man could approach apart from the shedding of the blood of bulls and goats and lambs. The Law condemns all that stands before it for no man can obey it to even an nth degree of perfection. Short of perfection that Holy God must judge for there is no barrier between that Holy Law and that Holy God. The God of the Old Testament is a God of Judgment.
The God of the New Testament in no different from the God of the Old Testament except that in this case, Jesus Christ become the propitiation for the sins of every sinner that approaches Him at the Cross of Calvary where the Blood of a perfect sacrifice was shed. Now the God of Judgment has judged His Son in our stead . . . and through that . . . He is no longer a God of judgment, but a God of grace.
Today, man must choose whether he wants to ultimately face the God of the Old Testament with nothing more than His failed attempt to keep the Law perfectly, or the God of grace who refuses to see the sins of the saint because the Blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, has covered them all.
Your choice . . . I've made mine.
