Yeah. Which is why people need to start taking their faith seriously and quit giving into fear, intimidation, and perpetrators who happen to be loved ones.
And the reputation of an institution is never more important than the people involved. God doesn't care about reputation. He cares about people. I don't care if the church is the bride of Christ. We may live in an age of grace, but she is not above reproach and discipline. To those who say, "Oh, if you insult my wife, you hate me," I call BS. I'm going to tell a man if his wife is cheating on him and ruining other people's lives.
And for the record, the Israelites in the Old Testament used the exact same excuse. Israel was seen as God's wife, and she said, "Oh I'm God's chosen, he would never judge me!" Yeah, she said that while conveniently forgetting the warnings in Deuteronomy. She basically gave God the finger and prostituted herself. Seriously, the Israelites did things that would SHOCK us nowadays.
The prophets had the unenviable task of trying to get her to turn from her ways, but she refused to listen to all the warnings. So God had no choice but to send Babylon to take them into exile and burn their beloved Jerusalem to the ground. She didn't keep her word, but he most certainly did.
