That big gherkin is what happens to cucumbers that are radioactive. I saw this on an episode of Gilligan's Island many years ago. Some radioactive seeds washed up on shore one day and the Professor planted them. It grew all kinds of funky looking veggies. After you eat 'em you glow in the dark.
