growing and revitalizing older congregations is a great concern for me. the church i attend is mostly elderly. at 66 i am actually one of the young crowd. i am confident most of the children of these folks are members of a church somewhere,, but have grown up and moved on. to other cities and states and lives. what we are left with is maybe six families with children under 18, and a bunch of us geezers.
aging out of a church, or any orginization,,such as VFW, Lions, or other civic organizations has become an issue we are all dealing with. as i see it youth today consider these all as for old people. they are not seeing the value in attending church. and we are failing to demonstrate that value.
for the last several months god has been seemingly whispering about this to me. keeping it constantly on my mind. with some urgency i am searching for an answer that's probably far more complex then it needs to be. i'm going to start out simple instead, and make a determined effort to show in my life what going to church, god, and jesus mean to me. how it impacts my life in a positive way. i will try to restart our men's group , which has not met in 3 years. (a lot of our older guys no longer drive) and personally invite young men and women to come visit our church,, or join one of our bible study groups. many or the old guard denominations are losing members, while new evangelistic, and what i call "entertainment churches" are growing. clearly the older traditional bible following churches need to refocus.
Hi bigjohn, you just described the church my wife and I attend. We have been regular attenders for about 2yrs and each week that passes we have noticed more and more younger folks who have moved on to greener pastures. I myself just finished 6 rounds of chemo for prostate cancer that I acquired in service to our country in Vietnam from Agent Orange. My wife is friends with the lead pastor's Mom so they can apply their spiritual gifts and plan social time together but I'm about as useful as an ice box in Alaska.

Further more what concerns my wife and I is that 3 top level leadership positions appear to have jumped ship; 2 men and their families of course, for apparently proper motives and God's leading; and the husband and wife worship leaders who packed up and left abruptly for unresolved grievance. The pastor is middle aged and very gifted at teaching but I hear complaints that he is not friendly like a pastor should be. Full attendance is likely about 300; looks like about 225 or less at times.

At this point I probably should clam up lest I reveal more about our Church than I should. My wife is unable to say anything at all about her concerns about our Church because she is very close to the pastors Mom. We are regular attenders not members yet. It is amazing that your men's group has not met in three years, wow. Thank you for voicing your concerns and frustrations on this public forum. I realize your post is quite a few hours old and growing but felt the need to respond in kind, and it is also growing late her where we live in California.

God bless.

move-on, TruthTalk, you both need to find 'greener pastures',
writings on the wall'...choices, they just never stop, and should
never stop us from growin-up into Jesus Christ and His ways...

a true Christian's Walk is just that, a continual Walk, and then
pausing only when we are led to, and then we are asked to always
move onward, forward, towards The Light of our Holy Creator...
