John 1:[SUP]12 [/SUP]But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:[SUP]13 [/SUP]Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

This is a reminder which reproves point # 4 below and at other parts of your reply below.

To expound on reproving point #4 above is Jesus's own words.

John 3:[SUP]5 [/SUP]Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.[SUP]6 [/SUP]That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[SUP]7 [/SUP]Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.[SUP]8 [/SUP]The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

So being born again is being born of the Spirit. No Nicodemus is asking how one is born again as in saved.

[SUP]9 [/SUP]Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?[SUP]11 [/SUP]Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.[SUP]12 [/SUP]If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

Now Jesus is telling us how.[SUP]

13[/SUP]And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Now Jesus is hinting of His ascension as to when believers will be born again will happen.

[SUP]14 [/SUP]And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

Certainly will happen after His crucifixion in linking to happening after His ascension.

Now Jesus says how one is born again as in saved.

[SUP]15 [/SUP]That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.[SUP]16 [/SUP]For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Now... if you separate receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit as separate from salvation, then you have this reproof.

Romans 8:[SUP]9 [/SUP]But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

So being born again as in being born of the Spirit is when a believer is saved. With the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ & the Father in them, they have eternal life because God is with them, thus they are saved as in His.

Ephesians 1:
[SUP]11 [/SUP]In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:[SUP]12 [/SUP]That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.[SUP]13 [/SUP]In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,[SUP]14 [/SUP]Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.[SUP]15 [/SUP]Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

For clarifying point #3, it is true that there is a sanctification during our walk with Him by faith ( see 1 John 1:3-7 ), but as far as salvation goes, the sanctification of the Spirit & the belief of the truth had occurred at the hearing of the gospel.

2 Thessalonians 2:[SUP]13 [/SUP]But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:[SUP]14 [/SUP]Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.[SUP]15 [/SUP]Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

They were not saved until they had received the promise of the Spirit. Romans 8:9 says they are not His until then.

Those 12 men were not believers in Jesus Christ; Paul knew they were some kind of disciples but found out that they knew nothing about the Holy Spirit and inquired further to find that they were disciples of John the Baptist's. They were not believers in Jesus Christ nor baptized in His name for anybody to call them believers in Jesus Christ or His disciples. Paul had to tell them about Jesus Whom John the Baptist was preaching about and then those 12 men got baptized in Jesus's name and then they had received the promise of the Holy Ghost.

Just some truths to reconsider and discern by Him.
long read could you please for my sake explain the following

"This is a reminder which reproves point # 4 below and at other parts of your reply below.

"To expound on reproving point #4 above is Jesus's own words."

"
Now... if you separate receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit as separate from salvation, then you have this reproof."I am not sure but I have not suggested that anywhere.

"

Please explain what happen what event happened in John 20:22 after Jesus had rose from the dead ? and what happen to the same people on the day of Pentecost? in Acts 2.

how could those be saved if Christ had not yet died and rose again?
Like Abraham, they believed God and it was acccounted to them as righteousness. They had the faith of Abraham. :)

CSI1- when we repent and believe, we become justified through faith so that inorder that our faith may result in sanctification by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The fire refers to ongoing sanctifucation which is the process of being renewed in the knowledge of God's judgement on the cross for our behalf, and the purification which comes from the shedding of the blood of Jesus, which covers us from our sins.
This leads to new life ( Baptism in the Holy Ghost).

There is one Baptism which is through faith which leads to new life. This is accomplished at once and in order through the inward working of the Spirit.
we are saved by grace through faith which bring justification sanctification is the ongoing process of being made into the or becoming more like Christ and we become less. Yes I agree the fire is that of sanctification. The term Baptizer in the Holy Ghost found in the gospels is Jesus Christ. I see the bible teach Born again of the only three verse that use that term found in John's Gospel and 1pet chapter 1 this is clearly speaking of salvation in Christ. But the term Baptized, baptism, and baptizing is not in context to being Born again . the New testament is clear that water baptism is of repentance, then you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit we see this happen repeatedly in the Book of Acts 10:47. 11:16, and chapter of Acts 19

That is the way I would see it.

Water is after Holy Spirit baptism. Water is symbolic of obedience and not for salvation. Only the Holy Spirit regenerates and cleanses from all sin.

It is said by scholars that Apollos may have been among, but not with, the 12 disciples at Ephesus. Apollos believed in Jesus, but only was baptized in the fathers Baptism of repentence (water). Which he later believed in Christ unto salvation, which is the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. It can be argued that the disciples believed in Jesus, but not on the Holy Spirit which would follow through natural course. We believe in Christ UNTO salvation. They were then to become baptized into the Lord concerning His resurrection, leading to first fruits.

How could they have been baptized unless they had first heard the whole Gospel acount?

Paul only provided the name of Jesus, which meant that they had to have heard the Gospel before. But not the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the result.
Hi Georgie,

Maybe this was already said earlier and I missed it. Here's what Peter said right after the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost.

Acts 2:28 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

- Repent
- Water baptism
- Holy Spirit Baptism.

That was for the 10 disciples only, our example is when the church begin on Pentecost and the 3000 were saved, they represent us and they did not get two baptisms of the Spirit, they got it all at conversion according to Peter.
excuse me 120 were empowered as Acts chapter two say " On each of them" verse 3 and verse 4 says " they were ALL filled with the Holy Ghost" all is the 120 in John chapter 20:22 says the disciples were but Thomas was not it was 8 days later when Jesus appear to him very important to remember a days have passed after Jesus had told them to receive the Holy Spirit and breathed on them.

Luke says 24:33 says 11 were gathered . Mark says it was 11 and Corinthians 15 " After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep."
it was not only the 10 .

Hi CSI,

Okay, I misunderstood. I thought some we're questioning what the status was of believers before the death of Jesus.

Then a voice came to them, saying "Micheu and Michar and Mnesinous, who are over the holy baptism and the living water, why were you crying out against the living God with lawless voices and tongues without law over them, and souls full of blood and foul deeds? You are full of works that are not of the truth, but your ways are full of joy and rejoicing. Having defiled the water of life, you have drawn it within the will of the powers to whom you have been given to serve them.
"And your thought is not like that of those men whom you persecute [...] desire [...]. Their fruit does not wither. But they will be known up to the great aeons, because the words they have kept, of the God of the aeons, were not committed to the book, nor were they written. But angelic (beings) will bring them, whom all the generations of men will not know. For they will be on a high mountain, upon a rock of truth. Therefore they will be named "The Words of Imperishability and Truth," for those who know the eternal God in wisdom of knowledge and teaching of angels forever, for he knows all things."

But the generation without a king over it says that God chose him from all the aeons. He caused a knowledge of the undefiled one of truth to come to be in him. He said, "Out of a foreign air, from a great aeon, the great illuminator came forth. And he made the generation of those men whom he had chosen for himself shine, so that they could shine upon the whole aeon"
Then the seed, those who will receive his name upon the water and (that) of them all, will fight against the power. And a cloud of darkness will come upon them.
Then the peoples will cry out with a great voice, saying, "Blessed is the soul of those men because they have known God with a knowledge of the truth! They shall live forever, because they have not been corrupted by their desire, along with the angels, nor have they accomplished the works of the powers, but they have stood in his presence in a knowledge of God like light that has come forth from fire and blood.

Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

very Good Jesus is talking about the Born again experience which did not happen until His death and resurrection . In John 20:22 we see the Spirit breathed on them BY the Lord Himself . It is also clear that Nicademous did not understand what Jesus was saying But after John 20:22 something happened after they were in the presence of the risen Lord. Then they were told to wait . The empowering was not done to be born again, it was for power to do the works of God as Acts shows.
Not really. Remember that Jesus gave the Holy Ghost in Matthew 10th chapter which included Judas Iscariot whom was not a believer.

Matthew 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.[SUP]2 [/SUP]Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;[SUP]3 [/SUP]Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;[SUP]4 [/SUP]Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.[SUP]5 [/SUP]These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:[SUP]6 [/SUP]But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.[SUP]7 [/SUP]And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.....[SUP]18 [/SUP]And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.[SUP]19 [/SUP]But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.[SUP]20 [/SUP]For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

So the power and the Holy Spirit was given to these 12 disciples even though Judas was never a believer.

John 6:[SUP]64 [/SUP]But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.[SUP]65 [/SUP]And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.[SUP]66 [/SUP]From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.[SUP]67 [/SUP]Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?[SUP]68 [/SUP]Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.[SUP]69 [/SUP]And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.[SUP]70[/SUP]Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?[SUP]71 [/SUP]He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

So what happened in John 20:28 was the same as the event in Matthew 10th chapter which was a temporary filling of the Holy Ghost. That means they were not saved yet in John 20:28 nor in Matthew 10 chapter until Jesus was no longer present with them and had been glorified by His ascension to the Father.

John 7:
[SUP]38 [/SUP]He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.[SUP]39 [/SUP](But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 14:1
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.[SUP]2 [/SUP]In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.....[SUP]16 [/SUP]And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;[SUP]17 [/SUP]Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you............[SUP]23 [/SUP]Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.[SUP]25[/SUP]These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.[SUP]26 [/SUP]But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

So the promise of the permanent indwelling Holy Ghost aka our seal of adoption, would only be given when Jesus had ascended to the Father, being of the Firstfruits to be in Heaven in bringing us to God.

So the disciples were not saved until Pentecost when they had received power from on high as born again.

John 1:
[SUP]12 [/SUP]But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:[SUP]13[/SUP]Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Pentecost was when the church was born with Christ as the Head from Heaven. So do not confuse the 2 temporary fillings of the Holy Ghost to when the actual promise of salvation would come when He had ascended into Heaven. After salvation in being born again of the Spirit, there is no receiving Jesus Christ again. There is no sign for a saved believer to seek after in receiving the Holy Spirit as if that is a separate event from salvation, because Romans 8:9 says they are none of His until they are born again of the Spirit.

Romans 8
:[SUP]9 [/SUP]But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

John 3:
[SUP]5 [/SUP]Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God....[SUP]13 [/SUP]And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.[SUP]14 [/SUP]And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:[SUP]15 [/SUP]That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Acts 2 has Jews being water baptized before they had received the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8 had Samaritans believing in the things that Philip preached about, but they were not saved until they had received the promise of the Holy Spirit. Was the delay because of all the supernatural stuff that was going on there and with Simon whose heart was still not right with God? All we know is that God eventually sent the promise even though they had already been baptized in Jesus's name.

Acts 10 has the Gentiles receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit before water baptism and that was right after hearing the words of Peter when believing in Him brought the remission of sins.

So we go back to Jesus when He talked about when a person is born again.

John 3:[SUP]6 [/SUP]That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[SUP]7 [/SUP]Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.[SUP]8 [/SUP]The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Ephesians 1:[SUP]11 [/SUP]In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:[SUP]12 [/SUP]That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.[SUP]13 [/SUP]In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,[SUP]14 [/SUP]Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.[SUP]15 [/SUP]Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

Acts 8 has the Samaritans coming out from under the supernatural terror reign of Simon the sorcerer and I believe they had their sights on Philip as Simon did, because they thought Philip was ding all those things until the other 2 disciples came; but still again, that mentality was there because Simon thought he could buy that power in giving the Holy Ghost. So obviously, Simon's sight had to be lifted higher to the Lord his God just as the people needed that too. God wanted to save everyone there, including Simon, but He had to lift their sights away from Philip & away from the disciples to Himself as God is the One sending the Holy Spirit as promised for all those that believe.

Acts 19 is about disciples of John the Baptist's when Paul then told them about Jesus Christ and then they got baptized in His name and then they had received the promise of the Holy Spirit. They were not believers in Jesus Christ until Paul told them that was the One John the Baptist was preaching about.

So there is no separate receiving of the Holy Ghost apart from salvation. Believers receives the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ; they were not to seek Him by a sign because signs are for unbelievers; not for believers to know they had received the Holy Ghost because then that would not be receiving the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ but by a sign.

Hebrews 11:1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.[SUP]2 [/SUP]For by it the elders obtained a good report.....[SUP]6 [/SUP]But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Galatians 3:[SUP]14 [/SUP]That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.....[SUP]26 [/SUP]For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:[SUP]14 [/SUP]That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.....[SUP]26 [/SUP]For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

the context was the authority of the Lord jesus Christ the Lord Ship of his name that is why Jesus said when they came back and told Jesus even demon flee at your name . If they had the Holy Spirt why did Jesus tell them about the Comforter? HE would come and help them.

Was the delay because of all the supernatural stuff that was going on there and with Simon whose heart was still not right with God? a long read but you said "not really" in the beginning of your writing bout Jesus , then you say using John 7 which was before the Crucifixion says the Holy Spirit had not yet been given.. The Holy Spirit worked in the context of the Old testament which the Spirit of God would come on a person but not IN the person; the Spirit of God came on Jesus and what? Remained. no where did it say HE left before the Cross. your out of context with John 20:28 and matt 10. Matt 10 was before the Cross and John 20:22 was after the resurrection .

This is an interesting question.
The Spirit fell on Jesus, and John the Baptist was born anointed.

It appears the disciples could heal, caste out demons on Jesus's authority without
being anointed, but "clean" and believing.

After pentecost, the Holy Spirit dwelt in the believers hearts as a Holy Temple.
If one takes the verses about the law being written on our hearts, the law of Christ,
as the law of Moses is now fulfilled through the cross, it makes our relationship with
God real communion and intimate in a way that was not held before.

I grew up in the time of the charismatic revivals and baptism in the Holy Spirit was
very defined. I have though wondered about this, being an infilling of the Spirit,
rather than a baptism which comes when we are born again, born of the Spirit.

Only recently have I begun to see the prophets as brother in the Lord, though
what we have is greater, because the barrier is now removed.

It does beg the question about righteous living, purity, holiness and getting right
with the Lord, but I think the theology dictates certain consequences, based on
Pauls teaching.

Enow: Great post, you seem to have all the ducks in a row.
I give thanks to God the Father in Jesus's name for that. As it is, only He can cause the increase. I pray that He will.

Because what they had was a temporary filling of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus promised that once He had gone away to the Father above, it was then that the promise of the permanent indwelling Holy Ghost would be sent from the Father as Jesus baptized new believers in His name in becoming like citizens with Him in Heaven. It is Jesus that brings us to God and He has to lead the way as Christ the firstfruits by being in Heaven first before we can receive that seal of adoption from the Father; hence our salvation for when we had received the Holy Spirit, we had received eternal life for God is in us and is with us. That is the testimony we are to share and preach the Good News for there is no other calling for saved believers to preach nor to seek regarding the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

This is an interesting question.
The Spirit fell on Jesus, and John the Baptist was born anointed.
He was born again after Christ, the anointing one, anointed John. Christ is the Spirit that fell on the good soil of the heart, he makes it ready to receive the incorruptible seed by which all men are born again after ,if any man has not the Spirit of Christ they have not been born again .

Have you been born again?
