And now for the most trivial of all forum posts... I'm thinking about cutting my hair. I'm pushing 40 and wondering if I shouldn't tone it down a bit. Also, sometimes long hair looks kinda scraggly, and I'd hate to be that one weird woman with unkempt hippie hair. For reference, mine is very straight, medium thickness, brown and waist length. I wouldn't cut it SHORT short, because that's too much work to maintain and I look kinda masculine with very short hair, but I'm not sure how much to cut off.

Questions:

How long is too long?
How old is too old?
Is there a point (maybe shoulder length) when all hair just looks "long" and it doesn't really matter HOW long it is?
If you keep it in a ponytail 75 percent of the time anyway, does the length matter much?
Do you know people who you think would look better with shorter or better trimmed hair?
Do you think women with long hair (vs short hair) are taken less seriously, are more intimidating, less approachable, or any other stigma?
Are you as a woman, treated differently when you change your hair style or length? (This is just to satisfy my curiosity, since I came across some surprising articles on how women's hairstyles affect their treatment in the workplace.)

Anybody else have hair questions? :p

I personally like shoulder length hair, it's the versatility of having it because you can wear it up, down, or whatever and it still looks feminine yet it's fairly easy to maintain. I don't think age should have anything to do with it, but more of your body type and your facial structure....but as a society age gets put into a lot of things it shouldn't.

I had someone on here a couple weeks back tell me that I have Gwyneth Paltrow hair, I don't see it but I'll take the compliment haha! I've seen pics of you in your albums and you have beautiful hair and I'm sure whatever you choose will look lovely

Hey Gracie,

40 is a funny age, isn't it? At 40, apparently all the fun stops--we're supposed to start being responsible, stop wearing mini-skirts (no worries here, I'm so short that a mini would look like a regular skirt on me, if I wore them), and, alas, cut our hair. I have no idea who made up that rule, but I like being a rebel .

My vote is to go with whatever you feel looks good, is affordable, and fits your lifestyle.

I happen to love fire-engine red hair, and if I had the time and money, I'd cut my hair to my shoulders and keep it dyed that some kind of outlandish color. (Shorter hair would be easier to maintain with that kind of color commitment.)

However, my wallet and lifestyle say otherwise. I don't have that kind of time for the upkeep, and how am I supposed to afford all the Botox treatments and plastic surgery to stay looking 35 forever if I spend all the money on my hair?!

I know for a fact that you are gorgeous and would look good in any hair length, but if you keep your hair in a ponytail most of the time (as do I), a short length just wouldn't be practical (unless you like it that way.) I find that when my hair is short it hangs in my face, and I'm constantly trying to pull it back anyway.

My only suggestion would be that if you're going to cut it, how about just cutting it gradually, like maybe 4 inches at a time? That way, it's enough to make a noticeable difference but not so much in case you have a "What have I done!" moment, because it will grow back in 6 months.

Keep us updated on what you decide to do. :D

It's gonna be beautiful, no matter what! <3

Are men permitted to answer? I'll assume that we aren't. It's just safer that way. :)

Do your worst, Dino! :D

(Seriously. Grace would love to hear from the guys out there, too, I'm pretty sure.)

If I'm wrong, I'll let her cut my hair.

Well... Maybe. :)

I tried all hair length but my favorite is long hair waist length. Curly hair is a blessing because you only comb it once in the morning. Sometimes you don't need to comb it at all because there is no difference anyway. Lol! My only problem with my long and thick hair is it feels heavy after a while so I just have it layered.

Ha! Yes Dino, please share! Women are always interested in what the other half thinks about fashion. (I make no promises about how safe it is, of course.)

I have a few simple rules with my hair.

I don't wash it myself, I have it washed professionally at a salon every week not with processed synthetic hair products from a grocery store but the best the team has.

I never colour it, it's all my natural brunette colour.

I always let it dry naturally because all that heat and any products can damage it severely.

I get my hair trimmed about every 12 weeks. To me there's nothing worse than seeing girls who have stringy, split end, thinned out dead hair that is totally unhealthy. I say to my stylist 'anything that shouldn't be there, chop off'. There's a distinction between having genuinely long hair and claiming you do but all you have is coloured, ironed, chemically destroyed stringy dead hair hanging off of you.

That's what keeps me happiest and at my hair at its most healthiest.

Well.

I guess none of you have back hair as impressive as mine...

Well, okay, here is my unsafe opinion. REPEAT: OPINION. :)

Personally, I prefer long hair on women (yes, "women", not "gals"... I am capable of learning... slowly). It doesn't need to be really long, but in general I like hair that is at least to the shoulders. Hair is usually one of the first things I notice about a woman (height is the other). Not that women with short hair are not attractive, but I wouldn't notice them as quickly. :)

My hair was very long and straight most of my young life. After having three children, my hair took on another life. It became its own entity and ignored any attempts to style it. I had to get spiral curl perms so I'd look presentable for work at my office. Those perms became quite expensive year after year, so I decided to cut it shoulder length and let it be free.

My hair and I have now come to terms that in Christ I am spiritually free... and my hair is free to do its thing as well.

Haha... I mean, you can use "gal" if you like. I won't go unhinged or anything. I think living in Texas has made me more sensitive to anything cowboy-sounding. I'm sure it sounds perfectly wonderful in Canada. :p

So, this is what I'm gathering about men in general... anything longer than shoulder length is kind of considered "long". And once it's long, it may not really matter HOW long it is - the effect is the same. Would you say that's true?

The article I read was written by a woman around 40yo who had long hair. She never thought anything about it until one day a younger man (early 20s) started chatting her up while her back was turned. When she turned to face him, he noticed her age and awkwardly retreated. She realized that her hair made her look a lot younger from some angles, and the contrast with her face was too noticeable. I just found that interesting. Hadn't ever thought about it before.

That's a lot of questions xD
So I'll just answer one lol

No length is too long!!! :D haha I love long hair. My hair goes down to my waist. It doesn't look bad if you keep it well kept.
Mine looks awful cuz I really need to get it trimmed but when you take care of it it doesn't look bad.

I think I really depends on the person.
I know a staff member from a camp I work at who has very short hair and I think it suits her a lot better than long hair does.

I'm gonna just assume the same is true for short women.

(I hope you know I'm just giving you a hard time because you're so awesome to me...and it might be a little bit fun)

I like my hair very long.

I don't think I've ever been taken less seriously because my hair is long verses short.

I don't think there is an age limit on long hair. I'm not sure how this idea came about. I plan to keep my long as long as I can.

I wear my hair down, most days but wearing it up can be awesome too. It's definitely different than having it short.

I've never had a corporate job so I can't really comment on length of hair getting me treated differently professionally. I work in a field where I can have my hair any old way and it's all good.

I had waist long wavy dark brown hair, but as I went gray I got it
cut short and never looked back. People tell me it made me look younger.
Long hair on an older person can age them, it all depends on the individual.

Now I have it dyed purplish with a bit of a tint at the side. Here is a picture but
due to the lighting it looks more reddish than purplish, but it is a deep burgandy
purple. This was taken just after my 48th birthday.

The other advantage to cutting it short is saving time in the
mornings!

Ps if you dye your hair don't go back to your original dark tone, go for something
a bit lighter, skin lightens with age and going back to your original
colour can make you look washed out.

You look like a teenager Miri! Great picture. :D Short looks good on you!

Shorter hair was so much MORE work for me... I feel like with long hair, you put it in a ponytail or braid or bun, and it's done. With short hair, I always had to straighten or curl or add product to make the ends not-be-crazy.
