Would giving away your wife to another man to have sex with her count as being "lawful"? This is exactly what Abraham did - twice. We have just been religiously programmed to think whenever we see "commandment" - we think of the Law only.
All men have sinned and sin is the transgression of the Law - so it's easy "to get".....if we don't think of commandments as only the "Law" given by Moses.
God dealt with Abraham through a covenant of grace - not the Law as given by Moses.
In Luke 1 - they were blameless because they kept the temple sacrifices.
Here is Paul talking about being blameless too as to his interpretation of the Law. Phil 3:2-9 ( Notice Paul deals with the dogs - the evil workers - those trying to get people to go back to the Law for living in verse 2-3 ..Paul calls them the false circumcision)
Philippians 3:6 (NASB)
[SUP]6 [/SUP] as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless.
And yet Paul said that he was the chief of sinners and a coveter.
Paul who knew the Law better then anyone had this to say about the purpose of the law.
The purpose of the law was :
1) To reveal our sinful state. Rom 3:20
2) To inflame sin Rom 7:8
3) To minister death in us Rom 7:10-11
4) To lead us to Christ Gal 3:24
The law is good, holy and spiritual but we are in the flesh. Jesus fulfilled all the law! When we read the law we should be seeing Jesus in it. Jesus did not save us so that we could go back to the law.
But the purpose of the law was not for righteousness or salvation at all, it was to manifest sin in our lives, so that the purpose of grace which is in Jesus is to manifest salvation. Grace does not set aside the law, but completely satisfied it

Paul said the law id spiritual, holy, just, and good, and we do not void out the law through faith, but we establish the law.
But grace, anything God says out of his mouth IS law because his "words don't return to [him] void without accomplishing what they set out to do". That's rule. A law is a governing rule. "Man lives by every word out of God's mouth". To say man "can't keep" God's law is to say man can't live by every word out of his mouth. It contradicts the truth of scripture at its core, so there has to be another explanation.
It's not that man "can't" keep God's law ever, it’s that man "couldn’t" keep God’s law...*UNTIL AFTER* Christ. Now we who believe are freed so that we can do that through the power of Christ's love.
With respect, you're misunderstanding when Paul condemns folks who go back to the law. They were going back to following the instructions of taking animal sacrifices to the high priest to pay for their sins as a believer in christ...but those are two contradictory actions.
Animal sacrifices, post-christ, is a work of the law that nullifies belief in what Christ is doing in heaven. It was hard for them to quit the habit because they had been doing it all of their lives. They didn't understand animal sacrifice was just a foreshadowing of what Christ would do to forgive sins. But the commandments are always meant to be followed so that one doesn't fall into sin again after one is forgiven by Christ...we were even given Christ same holy Spirit that helped him resist sin in this same flesh of Adam that he had.
So with Christ in heaven as the true high priest, ministering with his blood, and his Holy Spirit in us guiding us to obey, the law (i.e. the cycle) of "sinning and (something) dying; sinning and dying; law-breaking and dying; law-breaking and dying" could finally be broken.
The purpose of ANY law in any society isn't for deliverance from a punishment either. The purpose of any law that's established by a government is
1) To show what a crime is, similar to Rom 3:20
2) To magnify it (like a magnifying glass) similar to Rom 7:8
3) To minister the punishment for crime, similar to Rom 7:10-11
4) To lead us to goodness in society, similar to Gal 3:24
But no law in society can *make* a person be a good person. No law in existence has the power to. The same goes for God's law.
But just because laws can't make a bad person be good doesn't mean those laws are tossed away as impossible or unnecessary to be followed. We're still expected to follow them in society. No, a person must be changed on the inside into a good person (independent from society's laws) and trained to follow those laws properly.
This is what Christ has done and is doing for we who want to be part of God’s society.
The whole purpose of the Law has been shown by Paul and it should bring us to Christ alone. Not so that we can go back to the Law again. That is anti-Christ belief. Paul said in the last days people would be "anti-Christ" NOT "anti-God".
The law was not made for the righteousness but the unrighteous. 1 Tim. 1:9 ( We are the righteous in Christ )
The Law of Moses is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We are to now eat of the tree of Life which is Christ Himself.
We do not follow Moses' Laws in the kingdom of Christ - we are in Him. His life is in us now and we can trust the Holy Spirit within us to guide us in life now. Romans 8:14
James says that it one breaks one law then they are guilty of the whole Law. You can pick and choose which ones you are going to live by. Either you pick the Law or you pick Christ.
The only "laws" that real Christians have today because we are "dead to the Law of Moses" are these below.
1) the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus. - Romans 8:2
2) the law of love - Romans 13:8, 10 : Gal 5:14
3) the law of faith ( the Law is NOT of faith Gal. 3:12 ) - Romans 3:27 and Gal. 3:11, 23
4) the law of liberty in Christ Jesus - James 1:25; 2:12
5) the law of Christ - Himself - 1 Cor. 9:21 ; Gal. 6:2
We don't need to "obey" Lev. 18:23 to not have sex with animals now because the law of the spirit of Life in Christ Jesus will stop that within us. We can trust the Lord by the Spirit of God inside of us to lead us now that we are in Christ. Romans 8:14
Read the OT and Old Covenant to see Jesus in them and being all fulfilled by Him alone.
Our life in not in "laws of Moses". They were a shadow of the real thing which is Christ.
This is why Jesus often preached Moses 2.0 on steroids to reveal the truth nature of the Law - which can be seen in scriptures like .." You have heard it said - You shall not murder ..BUT "I" tell you if you have anger towards a person - you have murdered them".
To go back to live by the Law of Moses is committing spiritual adultery on our Lord Jesus because we have died to the Law SO THAT we could be joined to Another - Christ Himself as one spirit together in our inner man. We just need to have our minds renewed to the truth of the new creation in Christ now so that we can walk out what already is inside of us because of Christ.
We live now by the life of Christ Himself living in and through us which is why we are dead to the Law.
"For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God". Col. 3:3
Jesus did not save us so that we could go back to the law.

I'm not in the mood to get into an endless argument about the importance of the Lord's commandments, but I think the foundation of our spiritual lives includes obedience to the Lord's commandments.how significant is it that the foundation of the throne contained the ten commandments?
very interesting.
The law written on our heart is NOT the ten commandments - it is Christ Himself who is the fulfillment of the Law.
The Law Written on Our Hearts is not the Ten Commandments
![]()
“This is the covenant I will make with them after that time,” says the Lord. “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” (Heb 10:16)
“This is obviously a reference to the law of Moses,” says the law-preacher. “The Ten Commandments were written in stone, now they’re written in the hearts and minds of God’s people.”
Not true. Here are seventeen reasons why God has not written the Ten Commandments on your heart:
1. The law inflames sin (Rom 5:20) and the strength of sin is the law (1 Cor 15:56). Why would God want to stir up sin in your life?
2. The law condemns (2 Cor 3:9), yet there is no condemnation to those in Christ.
3. The law ministers death (2 Cor 3:7), but God wants you to enjoy abundant life.
4. Law and grace don’t mix. You are under grace, not law (Rom 6:14).
5. Living by the law will alienate you from Christ (Gal 5:4).
6. Living by the law is cheating on Jesus (Rom 7). Why would God do anything to encourage spiritual adultery?
7. We’re to live by faith but the law is not of faith (Gal 3:12). The law encourages us to depend on ourselves instead of Jesus.
8. Those who live under the law are under a curse (Gal 3:10). Why would God curse those he has blessed?
9. The law binds and enslaves (Rom 7:6), but Jesus wants you free.
10. The law keeps you immature for it makes nothing perfect or complete (Heb 7:19).
11. We have died to the law so that we may serve in the new way of the Spirit and “not in the old way of the written code” (Rom 7:6).
12. When there has been a change of priesthood, the law must be changed also (Heb 7:12). For God to write the old law on our hearts would be like saying Aaron is greater than Jesus.
13. God found fault with the law-keeping covenant and made it obsolete (Heb 8:7,13). Why would God insult his Son’s sacrifice by giving you the very thing his sacrifice rendered obsolete?
14. The law is a shadow of the good things to come and not the reality (Heb 10:1). Why would God give you the shadow instead of “the good thing”?
15. The Jews considered the law to be ordained by angels (Heb 2:2). If so, says the author of Hebrews, then it is inferior to the gospel of Jesus (Heb 1:4). Why would God give you an inferior gift?
16. Some Christians think that God gives them the law as a guide to live by, but why would God want you to repeat the mistake of the Galatians (Gal 3:2)? Why would God do anything to make you fall from grace?
17. The old law-keeping covenant required an accounting or remembering of sin, but the new covenant is characterized by God forgiving and forgetting on account of Jesus (Heb 10:17). If the law that God writes in our hearts is the law of Moses, then Jesus died for nothing.
If God has written the Ten Commandments on your heart and mind, you should be able to list all ten with no trouble. Can you? What’s the seventh commandment? You can’t do it because it’s not there, and a very good thing that is too! If the law that God writes in our hearts is the law of Moses, you’re in big trouble.
The good news is that God has written in us a far better law. What is this new and better law?

....and that we are not under it.
It’s important that you understand the difference between the old law (a written code you can’t keep) and the new Law (Christ himself, living in you).
