No, it's not a bad deal. It's not a great one, either. I think the laptop would treat you better if you got something that had a 7200 RPM hard drive in it, instead of the 5400 RPM drive (400-AAZU).
You have a good processor there, though (the i5).
Shoot! It's too bad I'm not local to you. We could totally get a cheapy or a middle tier laptop, then upgrade it.

McAfee is all I have ever used and has always worked fine, but what would you advise for virus and/or security protection then?
Im a couple hundred over what I should spend already (and he felt like he was being more then generous lol)
I believe you told me 7200 RPM (was it?) would be closer to $1000 or something like that.
I'll have to talk to the boss (he will bend that figure for me) he is pretty good, if I opt for this 7200 RPM, what can it do for me?

Well, I come here (on it) I check my emails every other day and use Blueletterbible to study, and I dont do much of anything else, except maybe visit amazon to make a purchase once a month.
I do like to listen to music (my own) and watch youtube sometimes.

have them put a free anti virus on it for you..tell them you don't want McaFee.. I don't recommend the free version of Avast. It slowed mine down til it just barely worked. I don't know if Macafee does a free version or not. You would save alot more money by getting a refurbished used one at a computer store. They wipe the hard drive of the previous owner's stuff, take off viruses, etc.. If you get one with windows 7, then Microsoft Security Essentials should already be on it. It turns off by default if you put a different AV on it, though..
what exactly are you going to use this for? Tell them you don't want any extras, that you're only going to use it to surf the net, play games or whatever..

Okay I will ask him just this, so you are saying, dont go with McAfee (at all) and I should expect that this Microsoft securities essentials to already be on it. I definately want to be sure because last night I went to download that (free) on the site given to me and the download wouldnt fully download for me. So if its not on there already I dont want to take the chance of it not downloading on the new one.
Oh I forgot, one more thing, I use Opera as my browser, is there anything that would hinder me doing that, I just love Opera, although I was having difficulty with Youtube on it, I eventually got it worked out but I love this one.

ok here is a few things to ask him:
1.) Is Microsoft Security Essentials already on the computer?
2.) Tell him NOT to put a paid AV on the computer, and ask him which free version AV is best.
I use Opera too and I love it, but it uses soooooooo much CPU on mine.. Browsers won't affect the computer..but download Firefox if you don't already have it, and then download Opera through FF onto your computer. ALWAYS go to the original download site for ANY downloads.. in other words, go to http//www.opera.com to download it, and not "xyz.com'. LOL.. Firefox is supported through Norton so it will check to be sure the download is safe.. I use FF only for getting pictures and doing photo editing.. I use Opera for everything else..
edit: make sure he takes off the windows 8.1 OS support recovery.. If it has windows 7 then theres no need for windows 8 to be on there too..

I will add my vote to malware bytes anti-malware, free version, for malware; and Microsoft Security Essentials for real time protection, it used to be weak but it's among the best now. It doesnt slow the PC down. I use Malwarebytes for occasional scans. I think nobody mentioned BitDefender antivirus. It's really worth a try too. It doesnt annoy with popups, doesnt slow your PC down, it's really neat and quiet and solid protection. I used it on Ubuntu though but it has overall excellent feedback.

Great advice, thanks sis, with windows 7 on that estimate it looks like it actually includes windows 8.1 (seven lines down from the top) but the windows 8.1 recovery is included for the windows 8.1 included with windows 7, see what I mean?

Wow!!! This is scary. I am not a computer expert and in the last few days I have taken three of our family older computers and cleaned them up. The computer I am on right now gave me all kinds of grief even after running Ccleaner, Malware bytes, windows defender, and adaware without eliminating all of the problems. Finally I tried adwcleaner ( free) and all the problems were solved. Just a thought.

McAfee is loaded onto a lot of computers because they pay companies like Dell to do it. Honestly, I feel that just about all anti-virus programs out there are pretty comparable as far as protection goes. Each one may have its own unique feature or two to tout, is all. McAfee used to have very high praises at one point, but it has sort of fallen on the wayside due to the overwhelming competition. Here are some other anti-virus programs to consider:
Malwarebytes is great at detection if you want to have the free version of it on hand. You'll just have to run it manually whenever you want; only the paid version offers real time protection.
And yes: 7200 RPM is right! It's not the be all, end all, but you will see a noticeable difference in the computer's performance between, say, a 500GB, 5400 RPM drive, and a 500GB, 7200 RPM drive. As you load more software onto the computer, that 5400 RPM drive will really begin to show its limitations. The 7200 RPM drives don't cost much more, either (about $25 - $50, depending on Dell's markup). It's the solid state drives that are expensive.

Thats how I was thinking about it.
I do prefer how they used to do things with CD's rather then site downloads I sorta hate going to all these sites and downloading stuff on my puters, I feel like a holier then thou person with that attitude (not meaning to) like they will make my computer unclean or something LOL
