This year, however, there is renewed optimism that the US and Iran will finally find each other on the same path; that these two nations can finally move forward and resume diplomatic ties.
From Iran’s point of view – not just the government but the people, too – the US is responsible for a long list of crimes against the Iranian people, from backing coups, creating the Shah’s savage secret police, SAVAK, to aiding the enemy, Iraq, during eight years of bloody war.
What’s worse is that the US, according to these Iranians, has never shown an inch of remorse for anything it’s done – including shooting down Iran Air flight 655 in 1988. The USS Vincennes incorrectly identified the civilian airliner as a military jet near the Iranian Island of Qeshm, shooting it down and killing all 290 people on board.

A recent poll in Iran shows that the majority of Iranians, close to 80 percent, support the normalisation of relations with the US. But that doesn’t mean, just like those at the rally, they are willing to forget anything. They’re not. Scars here are far too deep to be swept away in a sea of goodwill and optimism. For years, getting to the negotiating table was always seen as the challenge, but perhaps forgetting the past has been the biggest one all along.

Amazing that with all the rubbish that has been dealt out to the Iranian people, 80% support normalisation of ties between the US and Iran.

I don't think there are too many people in the world that want to be cozy with the U.S.

Obama is dreaming If he thinks Iran will change it's way. Obama is a socialist and it will never work.

what on earth does Socialism have to do with hoping to avoid military action against Iran?

(not to mention that it's only Republicans parroting propaganda that call him a socialist; no socialist would ever agree with that assessment)

the USA did sort of overthrow the Iranian government and set up a puppet dictator (before you start, this wasn't Obama's fault - it was the Eisenhower administration, who, btw, was a Republican). i'd say they have a pretty good reason to mistrust the US, particularly after what we did in Iraq.

personally i think we're going to invade/bomb Iran just as soon as we elect a Republican to the White House. if Romney had been elected, we would have done it by now. i'm thinking 2018-ish, if they can get their act together and float a viable candidate in 2016.

I suppose every other country need to mould itself after us? We've got a few (thousand) ways here that need mending and changed.

Then we better hurry up and arrest George Bush for crimes against humanity so it will put the fear of God into the rest of the rabble.

maybe Iran will call Obama a dictator, cite our massive WMD stockpile and use of drones, then invade & occupy us for a decade, to save us from the oppression. there's a few political parties within our own country that i think would be willing to join a coalition to that effect - after all, the Ayatollah is a right-wing religious conservative.

First step first. We sort out the war criminals, then look at your WMD and drones

We cannot make peace with a country that whips Christians for partaking in Holy Eucharist. We cannot make peace with a country that arrests people for meeting to share their faith in Our Lord. I do not condone a war, but I cannot condone peace.

I think you need to become familiar with what the US has been doing with Iran for the past 50 years. It has nothing to do with Christians and everything to do with Iran privatizing their oil. The US orchestrated the fairly elected Mossadegh out of office and organised and propped up one of the worst dictators the world has ever seen. Shah sold the oil cheap to the US and the US were happy. Does not matter what was happening to the Iranian people. The US and UK organised weapons for him to keep his people under control.

In 1989 the Iranian people had enough and elected their own leader. Since the revolution started in the mosques, it was a Shia cleric that was elected. Thus they become a country ruled by a Shia cleric.

So…America needs to change its ways in order to start a dialogue?.….the Christians sitting in jail cells do not matter much?…Islamic extremists in the streets represent the mainstream Iranian population?….

Come and live the Christian life in Central Asia for a few years. The issues at hand are not too complicated.

Pray that our brothers in Iran may be able to live in peace and work with their hands. Ask our brothers in Iran if they prefer the present government or the Shah, or something new. Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all of the other stuff gets added on.

Sounds like a good prayer
